Can I work as a coach with my BASI qualification?

We’re aware that some clubs have been advised that BASI-qualified instructors may not be covered by our insurance when working in a performance coaching capacity. It has also been suggested that only certain other qualifications are recognised for coaching under insurance frameworks.

Our position

We recognise that there is often overlap between instructing and coaching. While these are defined differently, the reality is that high-level instruction involves coaching, and low-level coaching includes instruction.

Some members have therefore asked whether their BASI qualification allows them to work as a coach within a club environment.

This position has been reviewed and confirmed by our insurers. Members are covered under BASI insurance to operate in a performance coaching capacity when working under the responsibility of a snowsports school or club, and within the remit of their qualification and current licence.

Guidance by qualification level

  • Level 3 and above
Members who have reached Level 3 — which includes a Performance Coaching module — are considered competent to work in a coaching environment, provided their BASI licence is valid and up to date.
  • Level 1 and Level 2
Members at Level 1 or Level 2 can also work under the responsibility of a club. However, we recommend completing the BASI Coaching module or a UKSS coaching qualification before doing so, as they introduce key coaching principles relevant to club environments.

Long-term coaching careers

Members who wish to focus on long-term athlete development or pursue a dedicated coaching career are encouraged to follow the UK Home Nations Governing Body coaching pathways.
